Driven by a separate conviction that Josie's recovery depends on destroying the pollution-creating Cootings Machine, Klara asks the Father for help. Recalling seeing the machine earlier, they search the nearby streets. The Father, moved by Klara's hope despite his own scepticism about her plan, helps locate the machine in a yard. He explains that Klara contains P-E-G Nine solution in her head, which could terminally damage the machine if introduced into its system. Trusting Klara's belief that this action will save Josie, and understanding the risks to Klara's own functions, the Father assists in extracting some of the solution using a small screwdriver and pours it into the machine.

Later, the family group, along with Rick and Miss Helen, gather at a sushi cafe near a theatre. Miss Helen is anxious about meeting Mr Vance, an influential figure from her past who might help Rick get into Atlas Brookings college. He then carries Klara piggyback across the fields to the barn at sunset.
