The narrative unfolds from the viewpoint of Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF) noted for her exceptional ability to observe and learn. Initially, Klara is positioned inside a store with other AFs, including her companion Rosa, all awaiting selection by a child.
Solar-powered, Klara regards the Sun as a vital source of 'nourishment' and, after witnessing an event involving Beggar Man, comes to believe it possesses special healing power. From the store window, Klara keenly observes the outside world, demonstrating a developing understanding of human interactions and emotions.
Klara's attention is captured by Josie, a girl who visits the store with her Mother. Klara observes Josie's frailness and careful walk, and Josie later hints that she is sometimes unwell. Josie's Mother questions Klara being an older B2 model rather than a newer B3 but is also impressed by Klara's perceptiveness. Following Josie's insistence, they purchase Klara.
Upon arriving at Josie's home, Klara meets Melania Housekeeper, who manages the household. Klara adapts to her new environment, experiencing some initial misunderstandings with Melania, and becomes devoted to Josie.
These early pages establish Klara's sensitive and observant nature, while introducing underlying themes concerning artificial consciousness, purpose, and the complexities of human connection as seen through her unique perspective.
